Vaping is the act of inhaling flavoured vapour through an electronic cigarette, which is usually refillable and rechargeable. Vaping mimics the action of smoking, offering nicotine without the toxic effects of tobacco smoke. E-cigarettes deliver a similar nicotine hit to traditional cigarettes, with the user benefitting from a substantially lower exposure to toxins and carcinogens. There continues to be much debate concerning the long-term effects of vaping, however , here is a growing scientific consensus that vaping is a far less harmful alternative to smoking. This has been supported by a recent 2017 study funded by Cancer Research UK. The study found that compared with full-time smokers, e-cigarette-only users had 97% lower levels of one toxic chemical, NNAL, that is strongly associated with lung cancer.
E-cigarettes
An e-cigarette is the apparatus by which the vapour is produced and the nicotine and flavouring is delivered. The main two variants are sub-ohm devices (more powerful, more vapour, more flavour), and mouth to lung devices (less powerful, less vapour).
E-cigarette Breakdown:
Rechargeable battery/mod – the mod is the principal component of a vape, and delivers the power to the tank. E-cigarette batteries may either be automatic, manual, or variable voltage models.
Atomiser – the atomiser, known as the coil, is often a coil of metal wire wrapped around a wicking material consisting of untreated cotton or a silicon wick. The coil uses a heating element to vaporise the e-liquid and produce vapour.
Tank – contains the atomiser and the e-liquid.
Mouthpiece – vapour is inhaled through the mouthpiece.
E-liquid
E-liquid, or e-juice, is a simple solution of Vegetable Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Flavourings and Nicotine (if required).
Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol are simple food additives, often used to sweeten or preserve food. Flavourings are blended to create our diverse range of flavours, and nicotine represents the only toxic component of e-liquid. If you purchase an e-liquid listed as 50/50, this means that 50% of the blend is VG, while the remaining 50% is PG, flavourings and nicotine (if the e-liquid is a nicotine blend).
How many mg of nicotine is right for me?
If you are currently a cigarette smoker looking to switch to vaping, it is generally advised that the more cigarettes you smoke per day, the higher the mg of nicotine you should use in your vape. However, the type of device you are using interacts differently with different levels of nicotine, and it is important to consider this when selecting your e-liquid. We have a few handy tips below:
Mouth to lung devices – These devices are less powerful than sub-ohm devices and give you a vaping experience that is similar to smoking cigarettes, so if you are about to make the switch, a mouth to lung device is ideal for beginners. These devices deliver slightly less flavour and produce less vapour than sub-ohm devices. We recommend starting with 12mg for a smoker on around 10-20 cigarettes per day.
Sub-Ohm device (straight to lung device) – These devices are more powerful than mouth to lung devices and therefore lower nicotine e-liquids such as 3mg and 6mg are more appropriate. Sub-ohm devices will produce more vapour and a more intense flavour than mouth to lung devices. We recommend starting with 3mg for a smoker on around 10-20 cigarettes per day.
E-liquid Safety and Storage
Ensure that your e-liquid is always kept in the supplied child-proof bottles, and stored well away from children and pets.
If contact with skin occurs, wash immediately and thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention if you feel unwell.
When refilling cartridges, take care to avoid unnecessary spillage.
Avoid swallowing or ingesting the e-liquid.
